I have spent over an hour trying to locate a publicly-available site to download and install chkdsk onto a bootable USB.

I usually use Hiren's boot cd to troubleshoot HDD problems. It has a lot of useful tools for hard drive checking and data recovery. I find that sometimes running chkdsk turns out better results when done from a bootable CD. They have a free version you can try to see if it works, and then buy a full version to capture all of the data. The Engineers have now started to backup their data because of the scare they had : so win win for me. This program has recognised all the HDD I have thrown at it, not all were recovered some took several days to complete.

I do not use Hiren's because in the past it has had illegal software on it I have not considered it in years. I just checked the site and it looks pretty legit now. I too use the UltimateBootCD.
